ProfessorMaryBeard,renownedclassicistandTVhistorian,istoexplorewhatlifewaslikeinoneoftheworld’smostextraordinaryandiconicarchaeologicalsites,inPompeii:LifeBeforeDeath,anewlandmarkprogrammeforBBCOne.MaryBeard–aworldPompeiiexpertandauthorofPompeii:LifeOfARomanTown–willbejoininganinternationalteamastheybringtheverylatesttechnologytobearonthismostextraordinaryofarchaeologicalsites.MaryBeardsays:“ThisisareallyexcitingchancetofindoutmoreabouttheordinarypeoplewholivedinancientPompeii.It'saonceinalifetimeopportunity.I'mhopingwe'regoingtounlocksomeifthesecretsaboutwhothepeoplewere.”Forthefirsttime,ateamisCTscanningandfullyinvestigatingtheworld-famouscastsofthebodiestoanalysetheskeletonstrappedwithin,toascertainalltheycanaboutwhotheywere,wheretheycamefromandhowtheylived.AteamisalsoconductingDNAanalysisofthebodiesforthefirsttime.Elsewhere,thedocumentarywillfollowtheworkofrecoveringdamagedfrescoesandmosaics,theexcavationandrebuildingofcertainkeybuildingsandtheorganisationandcataloguingofthethousandsofastonishingartefactsinthestorerooms–fromloavesofbreadtopetmonkeys,paintpotstopurses.Itwillshinealightontheworkofarchaeologistswhoareexploringthethirdofthetownthathasneverbeenexcavated,andwillpresentauniquefirstlookatthecompletePompeiiinstunningCGI.Usingtheevidencegleanedfromallthisresearch,theBBCOnefilmwillpiecetogetherafullpictureofdailylifeinPompeiibeforethetownwasdestroyedbytheeruptionofVesuviusinAD79.
